Orkney Amateur Swimming Club recently received a £500 Team Travel Grant from the NatWest Sports Development Programme (administered throught the International Island Games Association (IIGA)). The grant was awarded to help fund the travel for a team of 12 swimmers aged 12-15 years to Shetland in May, along with Coach Bobby Oag, to take part in the biennial North Atlantic Cup competition.

Orkney ASC Club President, Helen Rothnie commented: "The NatWest Sports Development Programme grant was a very welcome addition to the fundraising for this trip and we felt it fitted perfectly into the scope of the IIGA's programme to develop sport in the Member Islands as both Orkney and Shetland are Members of the IIGA.  This competition involves the top swimmers from both islands in the age groups 12-13 and 14-15 in an Inter-Island competition. These swimmers represent the NatWest Island Games competitors of the future from both islands. The opportunity to compete against our northern counterparts and the friendships formed during such competitions are invaluable preparation for future events, such as the Junior Inter-County as well as the NatWest Island Games.  Some of the swimmers that took part will certainly be striving to achieve the qualifying times to go to the Games in Bermuda in 2013 and again to Jersey in 2015 as well as to qualify for this year's National training programmes."
