22 IGA Member Island Athletes will compete in Beijing

Fri, 08 Aug 2008

The 29th Olympic Games will take place on 8 – 24 August 2008 in Beijing, China. Thousands of the world`s top athletes will compete in the Olympics this year and among them are 22 athletes from 10 Member Islands of the International Island Games Association (IGA). 11 of the IGA Member Island athletes competing in Beijing started their international sporting career by representing their island and winning medals at the NatWest Island Games. IGA Chairman Jorgen Pettersson commented: “Although we organise the friendly Games, with far from world class results, it is good to see that nothing is impossible when it comes to sport. The athletes who compete in the Olympics are great role models for all of us in the islands. All sportspeople in the world have one thing in common – they were beginners originally.” Two Islands from the IGA Family – Bermuda and Cayman Islands – will have their own team at the Beijing Olympic Games, athletes from other islands will represent their national teams.
