NEWS RELEASE – Gibraltar to Bid to Host the 2019 Island Games

During the recent NatWest Island Games in Jersey the Executive Committee of the International Island Games Association (IIGA) reported to the Member Islands that a new Host Island would have to be found for 2019. Unfortunately the proposed Hosts had encountered problems and a joint decision had been made by the Island’s Games Association and the IIGA that they would not be ready by 2019.

Following this announcement at the Annual General Meeting, held in Jersey on 30 June 2015, Gibraltar approached the IIGA and asked for the opportunity to prepare a formal bid document to show they would be able to Host the Games in 2019. Detailed discussions have continued since the initial approach and the IIGA have now agreed  to Gibraltar’s request and have formally invited the Gibraltar Island Games Association to submit the standard bid documentation by the end of September 2015.

Jorgen Pettersson, IIGA Chairman, said  that “he was very pleased to give Gibraltar this opportunity. It is the policy of the IIGA to give smaller Member Islands a chance to be the Hosts and it is good to see Gibraltar taking up the challenge”.
