The Executive Committee of the International Island Games Association (IIGA) met in Menora, the 25th member of the Association, for the first time on 13 – 16 March 2009.

“Menorca, the newest member of the IIGA, who joined the organisation in 2005, has brought cultural diversity to the IIGA as well as many good sportsmen and women to the NatWest Island Games” IIGA Chairman Mr. Jorgen Pettersson comments.

At the meeting in Menorca the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the NatWest Island Games 2009 in Aland, Mr Dick Ekstrom, presented a detailed progress report.  “We are well prepared and looking forward to welcoming all our friends to our island to enjoy friendship and sport,” Mr Ekstrom says.

The NatWest Island Games XIII which will take place this summer 27 June - 4th July in Aland has attracted more competitors than ever before and is therefore likely to be the biggest Games so far.  It is wide spread between the 25 competing islands - Jersey will bring the largest team with 251 accredited personnel and St Helena will bring the smallest with 6 accredited personnel.  Football is the most popular sport with over 500 competitors whilst only 20 Windsurfers will compete in their discipline.    For more details about the NatWest Island Games 2009 please visit http://www.natwestislandgames2009.ax

“We are delighted to see the continuing increase in interest from the Member Islands and pleased to play a part in bringing island communities together in friendly sport”, Jerry Whitsey from NatWest comments.
Besides sponsoring the actual event NatWest also supports the NatWest Sports Development Programme which is administrated by the IIGA.  So far 20 islands all over the world have benefited from the programme and thanks to the sponsorship been able to develop sports on their islands.

After Aland the Isle of Wight will be the host for the next Games.   The official launch of the NatWest Island Games XIV 2011 Isle of Wight will take place on Thursday, 19 March.
